At TruTails we have a select and careful breeding program. We bring together our "ideal" cats in health, type, and temperament. Every breeding we do has the potential to produce top show kittens with good size & coat. You'll notice as you browse through our site most TruTails breeding cats are CFA Grand Champions ~ ALL TruTails breeders are CFA Champions at a minimum. Many of our cats have earned titles in both CFA (Cat Fanciers Association) and TICA (The International Cat Association).

TruTails is committed to breeding only sound, healthy cats. We put all aspects of health: mental, emotional & physical, above all else. Prior to mating, our breeding cats are examined by our vet. Our breeders must be confirmed FeLV/FIV negative and at the same time be healthy & ready for the rigors of breeding. Some cats in the Maine Coon breed have been found to have Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) and Hip Dysplasia (HD), so our breeding cat's hearts and hips are checked for genetic soundness. We DNA test our breeding cats for the one HCM gene identified at this time, and we ultrasound the hearts of our breeders over the age of two for HCM. We screen, via x-ray, for HD between 1-2 years of age. We prefer the Penn Hip test since it has been shown to be more accurate on cats than the OFA test that was developed for dogs.

We also pay special attention to temperament when choosing breeding partners. We believe a friendly, loving disposition is a required attribute of Maine Coon Cats, temperament is as important to us as type! We believe temperament is 50% genetics and 50% environment... so in addition to carefully matching temperament. in our breeding pairs we put forth the extra effort to make certain the environment is conducive to social, friendly, confident kittens. We think you'll agree we are successful when you meet our kittens.

If you are interested in being owned by a TruTails kitten, be sure to check for currently available kittens on the Kittens page. Also look for available adults on the Retirees page
