Satchmo

SIRE: GC, RW, Kankoonkats Lil'Britches
DAM: CH, Coonyham Tallulah of TruTails
DOB: October 3, 2000

GC, RW, TruTails Satchmo is the first born TruTails kitten. You can imagine our surprise when this Solid Black male was born out of our two Brown Tabby w/White cats!!! Although we knew GC, RW Kankookats Lil'Britches & CH Coonyham Tallulah of TruTails COULD carry non-agouti (non-agouti is the genetic word for the absense of tabby markings) we were really surprised to find that both Lil'Britches & Tallulah could also "mask white." Then to have both of those traits appear in our very first kitten, we were truly astounded!!!

We had such dreams of showing the firstborn TruTails male kitten and here we were... everybody was telling us how "difficult" it was to show any solid Maine Coon, but a Solid BLACK was pretty much impossible. But as time went on and we watched our black kitten grow & blossom we figured maybe "love was blind" but we really wanted to try showing this long awaited kitten ~ the FIRST TruTails Male. And Dennis really believed that this boy was impressive enough to overcome being a "minority color."

It seems that Dennis was right, Satchmo had a good kitten career, and he did very well in Championship. As a kitten he started receiving some notice with his tremendous boning, and musculature. As he matured, his good type, deep solid black coat, and wonderful show attitude over came his lack of tabby markings, then add to that, his size ~ Satchmo definitely inherited his sire's size ~ and the combination made it almost impossible to ignore this Gentle Giant. in the show ring. In addition, he was always a favorite of the show hall visitors and by the end of the show season had his own "fan club."

Congratulations to GC, RW, TruTails Satchmo. Satchmo became a Grand Champion in CFA at 10 months old at the MoKan cat show in August of 2001.

The first TruTails kittens out of this handsome boy were born in July 2001. Do you find it surprising that we are fast becoming real fans of Black Maine Coons? GO SATCHMO!!!

Satchmo had a wonderful show career! ~ even with a 3-month break recovering from a food allergy... He finished the 2001-02 show season as the Gulf Shore Region's 18th Best Cat in Championship! And he was CFA's Best Solid Colored Maine Coon in the Nation. WOW!!! WAY TO GO, SATCHMO!
